Sailors' Stories: Doc Mike Navy Medic

Breaks 80 at St. Andrews from a Wheelchair

Whether you are a golfer or not, this courageous story of Navy Medic Mike Reeder, known as Doc Mike, who  survived a mortar explosion yet went on to break 80 at St. Andrews, will touch you.

Mike lost both of his legs from the knee down in combat during Viet Nam, but he didn't let that hold him back from becoming a single digit handicap and fulfilling his dream of playing at the home of golf.  Along the way he fulfills a promise to his Country, his friend and himself.

In 2010 he became the first golfer to play the Old Course at St. Andrews from a wheelchair.  How are you feeling about YOUR handicap NOW?

Shown on ESPN July 19, 2011
